Keith Robinson Talks Music
Talented, ambitious, and dynamic are just a few words that can be used to describe actor, singer, and songwriter Keith Robinson. Robinson was first introduced to the public in the 2004 hit film “Fat Albert” and has since been seen playing various roles from television series, “American Dreams” and FX’s critically acclaimed Iraq war series, “Over There”, to the big screen with a strong supporting role in the Sony Screen Gems war/romance/drama “Dear John” and the holiday classic film “This Christmas.” It was Robinson’s breakout performance in “Dreamgirls” as C.C White, the brother of Jennifer Hudson’s character Effie, that got him world wide recognition, and the world witnessed his amazing singing ability.
When he’s not acting, Robinson is in the recording studio working on his music. He was invited to perform with Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, and Anika Noni Rose at the 2007 Academy Awards, where they performed the Oscar nominated song from the “Dreamgirls” titled “Patience”. With musical influences like Sade, Stevie Wonder, and Sting, it’s quite evident why Robinson is such a soulful singer. “I’m influenced by a lot of soul singers and singing came before the acting so I knew I was going to always do something in music,” said Robinson.
His first solo album, “Utopia”, was released in late 2009. His new single “Same Rules”, produced by Pollow Da Don’s protégé, Hollywood Hot Sauce, dropped January 2012. “Same Rules” is featured on the soundtrack of the film, “Dysfunctional Friends” in which Robinson stars in alongside Stacey Dash, Meagan Good, Hosea Chanchez and Terrell Owens. Robinson’s new song is also the title track of the film, and featured on the trailer.
If you’re looking for Robinson to wait on a record deal, don’t hold your breath. “My main objective as a musician is to give my music to the people, whether it’s independent or with a major record label. If it happens then great, but that’s not my main focus,” said Robinson. He knows the importance of being the frontman in his career and promoting himself rather than depending on others to do it for him. He advises aspiring artists to be proactive and to use all media outlets for exposure. “Be viral, be consistent. Don’t wait for a record label to find you and sign you,” he said. In regards to his sound and upcoming album due out in the Spring, Robinson’s fans can expect good soulful music. “It’s going to be me, soul music, real singing, real concepts, just some real musical.”
Keith Robinson has yet to show the world the full him and his raw talent. With his indie film, Dysfunctional Friends in theaters now, another film titled Divorce Invitation due out in the Fall, and an soulful R&B album coming out in the Spring, Keith shows us that his work ethic is impeccable and unstoppable. He’s ready to take the industry by storm.
