JoiStaRR has done a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes for quite some time. She has toured the world with Kanye West as his background vocalists for more than 5 years, performed and recorded with artists such as Raphael Saadiq, PJ Morton, Ghostface, Christina Milian, Estelle, Kid Sister, Musiq Soulchild, and T.I , and written songs for artists such as Chris Brown,Mary Mary (who are actually her sister-in-laws), Estelle, Mario, Brandy and more. Now she is putting the “Star” in JoiStaRR and stepping into the spotlight all by herself!
My first time seeing JoiStaRR was in David E. Talbert’s “Love On Layaway” play, which featured Deborah Cox, Mel Jackson, Chico Benymon, Cassi Davis, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins. While she was intimidated at first to join the stage with such experienced talents, it gave her a chance to get her feet wet and decide whether she liked acting or not. She met Talbert after attending one of his touring stage productions, and she told him that she’d love to be in one of his productions, after seeing how much fun it looked. He auditioned her on the spot, and was obviously impressed, seeing that she ended up in his next production.
While she enjoyed singing on stage, she was somewhat nervous about speaking lines in front of a live audience. However, it forced her to come out of her shell a little bit, but not as much as touring with Kanye West did. After West heard a song of her’s titled “Everything”, he sought after her, and had her come into the studio to work with him. He was a big fan of hers, and she was a huge fan of his, although she admits that she didn’t know what he’d looked like prior to meeting him . However, she was a diehard fan as a result of his “Through The Wire” song that she loved so much. West eventually asked her to stop recording her album, and tour with him for a couple of months, which then turned into five years.
In between touring with Kanye, and working with the other artists mentioned previously, she continued to record her own music, which is finally ready to be shared with the world. With a desire to make people dance, feel, and emote love, she wants to make music that allows her fans to relate and feel her soul. She wants it to be therapeutic, and something that her fans can listen to all day, everyday. Her upcoming album is titled “Magic” and she’s ready to hit the road to promote it.
Joi admits that she is nervous, yet, very excited as well to step out on her own and promote her own music. She’s always been in the background, which was comfortable for her, but now, she’s forced to step out of her comfort zone, and step up to the plate as a solo artist rocking in her own lane. She’s in a more vulnerable place now, as the focus is now on her lyrics, and melodies, inspired by life, experiences, and even paitingings. She also draws from her wide range of influences ranging from gospel artists such as Commisioned, The Clark Sisters, and The Winans, to singers such as Bjork, Lauryn Hill, and Sade. With her skills, experience, and all that she’s learned from those who have influenced her, she’s guaranteed to shine like the star she is, and continue to make a powerful mark in today’s music industry.
